Changing drive letter even though getting "The parameter is incorrect"

When I am try to change drive letter in Windows 7, I am getting error message:

The parameter is incorrect.

I know there are another tools to change drives letter. But I don't like to install a program for this simple reason. So I am searched and found a way by regedit.

The following example change the drive letter E: to M:

  1. Open regedit
  2. Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
  3. Rename the key \DosDevices\E: to \DosDevices\M:
  4. Restart the computer.
